Water No Get Enemy – Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, And Made Kuti (Live Performance)

When the sons and grandson of the progenitor of Afrobeat come together to perform for Global Citizen Live, there is only one song that is perfect for the occasion. Water No Get Enemy by Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
If imitation is the greatest show of respect, then it is incontrovertible that Fela Anikulapo Kuti is one of the greatest humans to ever walk the earth.

The fact that the rise of it being cool to be of African descent, Nigerian especially, coincided with the rise of multiple genres of music that is heavily influenced by the genre of music for which he was the torchbearer further reinforces this point.
Add to that the fact that his two sons, Femi and Seun Kuti, are the biggest Afrobeat artists on the planet. And now, his grandson, Made Kuti, is about to be number three, and hopefully, soon enough, the number one, and the one who reintroduces it to an even wider and younger audience, then you can’t but respect Fela and his legacy all over again.

I am one of those who believe the Global Citizen and other events of its kind are not doing enough to achieve their purpose, but if all they achieved this year is give us this live performance of Water No Get Enemy by Femi, Seun, and Made Kuti, then I’ll gladly give them a pass for this year.
Hopefully, this performance draws more attention to the catastrophic effect of global warming, climate change, and rising sea levels, on developing nations.

I’ll be glad to join any discussion on the politics and economics of climate change, the plight of island nations, the actions and inactions of global bodies, and how time is running out to remedy the situation.
While I join that conversation, I’ll have this performance of Fela’s masterpiece to comfort me as I remember that some Lagos communities are already nonexistent thanks to this issue.
