The voice of the people is the voice of God. That is one of the first proverbs I knew. And it was one that left me more baffled than confident.
Have you met people? Especially a mob? Have you seen the impact of a mob mentality? Do you know the kind of havoc they can wreak in an instant? Do you have an idea how difficult, if not impossible it is to get a herd mindset changed?
“The voice of the people is the voice of God.”
I wouldn’t oppose as much if it was the voice of some people. My protest would be minimal if the people in question were well versed and informed in the subject matter.
Not when they are all riled up and speaking from emotions.
These people you are branding as the voice of God, do they even know God? Do they believe in Him? Can they hear from Him? Do they know how to listen to Him?
At the same time, nothing happens without God’s foreknowledge and permission. Does that mean they speak for Him?
I know God will let a crowd take a wrong decision because they have turned from Him. When they cried with one voice, “crucify Him, crucify Him,” they were both fulfilling a prophecy and damning their souls.
But was that the voice of God at that time?
The voice of the people is the voice of God. Even when God wants to use it as a test, or an instrument for self-destruction.
Whenever you can tell that a decision is wrong, before concluding or agreeing with someone who makes the quote, look up the Bible. Weigh that decision with God’s word.
I know there are some decisions that there are no Bible verses that exactly covers it, but the principles of God’s word remains the same. Even across nations and generations.
Love the Lord your God; love your neighbor as yourself.
If any of these is contravened, messed with, or you are walking on the edge of it, then change that decision.
If no one is doing right, right remains right. And if everyone is doing wrong, wrong remains wrong.
The voice of the people is the voice of God; Sometimes? Always? Never?
In the midst of it all, you still need to decipher what He is saying from the cacophony you are hearing.
